Regions

  • Encourage mining to restart at Leigh Creek, including permissions to engage in underground CSG extraction.
  • Manufacturing decentralisation policy as discussed earlier.
  • Push for the majority of special economic opportunity zones to be within our regions.
  • Work with local and government stakeholders to fix the Coober Pedy water fiasco with a long-term sustainable and affordable water supply to support both current and growing populations within the town and surrounding areas.
  • Collaborate with private enterprise to support the development of Whyalla into a major regional industrial centre.
  • Urgently resolve the Port Pirie lead smelter pollution issue.
    • We will support efforts to ensure the chimneys are fitted with catalytic filters which can reduce lead emissions;
    • Ensure remedial work is undertaken on polluted land within and around the city.
    • Work with Nyrstar (and possibly BHP Billiton) to acquire land outside the city near Warnertown or Napperby and develop it as a communal garden to enable Port Pirie residents in affected areas to grow their own healthy fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • Support government efforts to work with elders in remote communities to address dysfunction. Special Economic Opportunity Zones will be established in disadvantaged communities to encourage economic growth.
  • Fight for reliable internet to be rolled out to all regional areas, allowing for online businesses to function all around our state.
  • Conduct a feasability study into the viability of constructing a desalination plant on the Eyre Peninsula to support increased population and agricultural development.
  • Encourage fruit growing on Northern Kangaroo Island.
  • Declare Kangaroo Island a Special Economic Opportunity Zone to support its bushfire recovery and help boost the local economy.
